Sky Player on PC

June 17, 2008

Sky Player has had eight incarnations since we first took responsibility for its much-acclaimed user experience and interface design, growing from a pioneering on-demand movie service to the most heavyweight on-demand TV service in broadcasting, boasting 30+ live-streaming premium channels and more than 5,000 hours of film and TV content to choose from.

Sky Player on PC was the first incarnation of Sky’s on-demand offer, and the very first product of its kind for any UK broadcaster, beating iPlayer, 4OD and the like by more than a year. Initially conceived as a nice ‘extra’ allowing existing Sky customers to download movies on-demand, its huge success meant that it quickly expanded to include premium entertainment and sports channels, too.

In 2008, Sky Player underwent another significant evolution, as we opened up the service beyond Sky subscribers, so that, for the first time, anyone with a PC could download or stream their favourite programming. In an industry first, users could also watch stream premium live content at the same time as it screened on TV.

Developed entirely by AllofUs, the elegant, simple interface makes interaction effortless and content highly personalised. BAFTA-nominated in 2009 and called “excellent…super-slick” by TechRadar, we’re not resting on our laurels – the eighth release is due shortly, so expect even bigger, better, smarter things soon.
